SSL Certificate | What is SSL?

SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer. It is the standard security technology for establishing an encrypted connection between a server and a browser (read about our hosting services for more information). This connection ensures that all data shared between the server (the hosted website) and the browser (the visitor) will remain private.

As an industry standard, Kwibsy provides free SSL certification and SSL set-up with hosting services.

SSL Certificate | How does it work?

In order to establish a secure connection, the server would require an SSL certificate. When we activate the SSL on the server, we’re prompted to complete a short number of questions regarding the identity of your website and your business. Upon completing the questionnaire, the server will create 2 cryptographic keys:

  1. the Private Key
  2. the Public Key

The Public Key is placed into a certificate Signing Request (CSR), which is a data file also containing your details. We then submit the CSR. During the SSL certificate application process, the certification Authority will validate your details and issue the certificate containing your details, allowing use of the SSL. Our server will match your issued certificate with your Private Key. Then, our server establish an encrypted link between your website and your customer’s browser.

What is usually a long arduous task, we have set up within a couple of hours – free of charge with hosting.

SSL Certificate | How does the SSL Certificate look?

Instead of showing each visitor a complex rundown of security points on your site, their browsers will provide them with a small key indicator that has become a well established sign of security, letting the visitor know that the site they are currently browsing is protected by an SSL encryption. You may have already seen the icon here on Kwibsy.com? The green padlock beside ‘Secure’ in the URL bar. Clicking on the icon will tell you more about the level of information which will remain secure on the site. The certification is issued to legally accountable individuals or businesses, or registered companies.

Typically, a certificate can be expected to contain your domain name, your company / business name, your address, your city, your state, and your country. In addition, it will also contain the expiration date of the certificate with details of the certification authority that was initially responsible for the issuance of the certificate in question. When a browser links with a secure site, via the web server, it will retrieve the site’s SSL certificate and check:

  • That the SSL certification hasn’t expired
  • That the SSL certification has been issued by a certification Authority trusted by the browser
  • That the SSL certification is being used by the website for which it has been issued

If the scan fails on any one of these checks, the browser will display a warning to the end visitor browsing for your site, informing them that the site is not secured by SSL.
